What can you visit in Fão

It's easy to fall in love with Fão, an old salt center from the Middle age,  located on the left margin of the river Cávado, where the architectural influence of the so-called Brazilian torna-viagem is notorious ( they were Portuguese citizens who imigrated to Brazil in the second half of the 19 th century, and returned later with considerable fortunes.  

Let's start our journey along Alameda do Bom Jesus. At the south top, it is worth looking at the Church of Bom Jesus de Fão, a building from the early 18th century, as its style, typical of pilgrimage sanctuaries, clearly shows. Continuing north through Avenida Dr. Henrique Barros, we find the Chapel of Nossa Senhora de Fátima, close to Clube Fãozense. Close by, Largo do Cortinhal, next to the river Cávado, is much sought after by locals and visitors to chat and simply enjoy the beauty of the place. You can now glimpse the bridge of Fão, officially named Ponte D. Luís Filipe, which connects the two banks of the river and which was, for more than a century, the main crossing of the Cávado on the coastline. In the distance, at sea, the legendary Cavalos de Fão (rocks). Legend says that, in ancient times, along the coast of Ofir, the ships of the great King Solomon, who came in search of gold, moored there.

The most famous sweet in Fão goes by the name of Clarinhas de Fão, whose thin and crispy pastry, sprinkled with powdered sugar, surrounds the chila filling. There are other delicacies such as the renowned cavacas and crispy Folhadinhos filled with egg cream.
